African Safari Botswana

Green Season African Safari in Botswana – a great time to visit.

GET BOTSWANA, AFRICA ON YOUR MUST DO LIST!

Green season in Botswana, Africa lies between late October and April and is when the desert comes alive and new life is breathed into the arid plains.

This time can be considered low season for safari touring, however there are great benefits to visit at this time.

Firstly, it’s birthing season!  From October you can witness young life taking first wobbly steps, or just coming into this world.    Elephants, buffalo, impala, giraffes, lions and zebras can be spotted tending to their young and enjoying the evolving green shoots and shade.

With the dry season ending around early October, the grasses are still low and foliage thinned so viewing is often better and the landscape, whilst can look a little harsh, is actually more dramatic.  Later in the season the waterflows are high and waterfalls spectacular. The Okavango Delta floods annually when waterflow from higher up arrives between April and June, so during this time, the water levels are lower and wildlife more concentrated near the thinner water supply.

Colourful migrant birds start arriving around late September / early October to breed and feed.  They can be seen gathering in great numbers along the rising water flows of the Okavango Delta.   Bee-eaters arrive in Botswana from Central Africa and are often seen in their hundreds and thousands of flamingos flock when the rains come.

Then there is the possibility of spotting the migrating zebra.  The amazing zebra migration is the longest land animal migration in the world.  Huge herds travel towards the Kalahari Desert in search of green pastures before returning the dry months.

Less crowds offer greater viewing pleasure and the lower seasonality pricing allows for some very favourable rates to enjoy.

I have just visited Botswana during this very season and anticipated the wet – which didn’t come!  The days were hot, the nights were comfortable, the wildlife in abundance and the experience unforgettable.

New life was all around us with impalas, zebras, giraffe, elephants, hippos and warthogs feeding and nurturing their playful young.   As is the nature of the wilds of Africa, hunting by prey was also spotted on many of the safari drives with the circle of life unfolding before our eyes. Wild dogs, hyenas, lions and leopards were sighted in action within easy drives from the camps.

There were many other highlights including the small aircraft flight into the Delta, a helicopter flight over the Okavango Delta spotting crocodiles, wading hippos, and drinking buffalo.  Flying low through the spray over the Victoria Falls and dining under the star filled nights.  Morning tea standing under the shade of an ancient tree in the wide-open plains, champagne sunsets around an open fire listening to the nocturnal animals and recounting the day just had.

Green season in Botswana Africa is truly a photographer’s dream and an incredibly memorable experience – and one I intend to repeat!
